Mountain Hardwear, founded in 1993, designs premium outdoor clothing and equipment for mountain sport athletes and enthusiasts everywhere. We worked closely with Gretel on their custom typeface and logo refresh. The resulting Hardwear type family is a visual extension of the company’s longstanding symbol, which has been part of its identity since the beginning: it draws on the combination of a hard outside with a soft interior, which was a reoccurring theme in wood type from the late 1800s. Together with Gretel, we’ve extended this metaphor of hard and soft to develop a broad range of styles that convey a spectrum of attitudes, from straightforward and technical to direct and irreverent.
For the evolution of their logo, we made the overall letterforms of the script (based on Roger Excoffon’s Mistral) simpler and more consistent in weight and proportion. The word “Mountain” is now typeset using their custom typeface.

Hardwear, la familia tipográfica de Mountain Hardwear, es una extensión visual del símbolo que la compañía ha utilizado desde sus inicios y que conforma la base de su identidad gráfica. El símbolo combina un exterior duro con un interior suave, un recurso recurrente en los tipos móviles de madera de finales del siglo XIX. Junto a Gretel, exploramos esta tensión para desarrollar una amplia gama de estilos que expresan una variedad de actitudes, desde lo técnico hasta lo irreverente.
En cuanto a la evolución de su logotipo, simplificamos las formas de las letras del lettering —basado en Mistral, de Roger Excoffon— y les dimos mayor consistencia en peso y proporción. La palabra “Mountain” ahora está compuesta con Hardwear.
